Award For Lancashire Folk Legends

There is always much talk about the Oscars around this time of year but a group of Lancashire folk legends already have one important award in the bag.

The Houghton Weavers were last night (Monday 26th January 2009) presented with a special ACE award (Admirable Contribution to Entertainment) in recognition of 34 years at the top of the trade along with numerous untold good works for charities, including PHAB and Lancashire Youth Clubs.

They have recorded twenty-five albums and can even boast a Number 1 hit in Tasmania with their perennial favourite "The Blackpool Belle", a song that also reached Number 3 in New Zealand.

The award statuette – called "Ophelia" - was designed by Lytham based ceramic artist Marie Kershaw for Blackpool good causes group "Through The Net" and has previously been awarded to such respected performers as Susannah York, Paul Nicholas and Brian Cant.

The presentation took place after a special performance by the group at the Rotary Club of Blackpool South at the Carousel Hotel to help bring some early cheer for the new year.
